Thale – Rosstrappen
Contents
Mountainbike routes
There is only one track in bikepark Thale, it’s the Rosstrappen downhill racetrack. Every year it’s used for the IXS cup.
It’s a nice track, not just for downhill racers, but also for experienced XC mountainbikers. It gets better when you go faster, there are no real technical difficulties, only a couple of medium size drops, but you can easily ride around them.
The lift is not fast.
EDIT 2020: There are new trails (see the map below), have you ridden them? Let us know in the comments below.
Mountain biking in Thale
Pro’s
- Nice track, suitable for a lot of different levels
Cons
- Only one track.
The village
The border between West and East Germany used to go straight through the Harz. Thale was in East Germany, it’s very interesting to see the differences.
There is a lot of folklore about witches (Hexen) in this area.
There is a small amusement park around the bottom station of the lift. If you prefer some quietness then there are a lot of hiking trails in the Bodetal, which has interesting geological features made by volcanic activity and erosion.
Hotels and apartments
Booking.comCampings
Klostercamping is a small camping in a quiet location near the city centre. And about 10min. by bike from the lift. Everything is clean, but the coin showers are a bit expensive.
Mountainbike trails
When you are out of the lift go across the parking, then follow the road to the right, after a couple of hundred meters slightly uphill you will see the start. The top part is more natural with roots, rocks and some steep and fast sections. The bottom part has more flow with jumps and brings you back to the large parking at the bottom.

Tips and tricks
You don’t buy a dayticket, but a ticket with 1, 10 or 20 points. You can use one ticket with multiple persons and it stays valid for a year.
The lift and the track are also open during the winter depending on the weather and the date, check the website!

Braunlage the tracks are nice, but the is lift slow.
Schulenberg Cool tracks and an even cooler vibe and hot sausage from the grill, you don’t want to miss this.
St Andreasberg too bad the mountain isn’t bigger, the tracks are awesome, but short. It’s more suitable for beginners than Braunlage.
Hahnenklee More and longer trails and better suitable for beginners.
